Toshiba Electronics Europe (TEE) has announced the latest Toshiba Mobile Display (TMD) range of active-matrix colour thin-film transistor (TFT) liquid crystal displays for the industrial market.

The display modules incorporate LED backlight technology offering long-life performance with 100,000 hours mean time between failure (MTBF).

The modules are designed to satisfy a broad range of industrial applications, test and measurement equipment, medical equipment, mobile computing devices and more.

Using the latest LED backlight technology, the series includes eight LCD modules, available in four screen sizes: 5.7in, 8.4in, 10.4-in and 12.1in.

Compared to traditional CCFL (cold-cathode fluorescent lamp) designs, LED-backlit displays offer characteristics such as lower electromagnetic noise, lower power consumption and a wider adjustable luminance range.

The mercury-free LED-backlit displays also reduce environmental impact in terms of both material content and energy consumption.

The LED-backlit displays do not require high-voltage and high-frequency circuits thus enabling greater flexibility in system design in terms of safety, electromagnetic interference (EMI) compensation, and system architecture.

In 2008, TMD started volume production of a new series of industrial TFT LCD panels that incorporated an LED backlight system with 70,000 hours MTBF at room temperatures (25C).

This year, in a new development, TMD has succeeded in implementing LED backlight systems with an MTBF of 100,000 hours at room temperatures (25C).

The backlight system achieves increased longevity through design optimisation for heat dissipation and luminous efficiency.

TMD expects to ramp-up production of the series during Q4 2009 and early 2010.

The development of a backlight system with an MTBF of 100,000 hours (approximately 11.4 years) fulfils typical product longevity requirements for industrial applications with frequent or continuous operation, thereby making the backlighting system essentially maintenance free.

The modules have been designed with a replaceable backlight structure to accommodate product longevity requirements encountered in some harsh industrial environments.

TMD has also added LED driver circuitry into the electrical interface for the displays, to simplify design-in time and cost.
