What is it?

Optical transceivers, transponders, repeaters:

An optical transceiver is an integrated circuit that transmits and receives data over optical fibre rather than electrical wire. A transponder (transmitter-responder) is a device that receives, amplifies, and then retransmits a signal on a different frequency. An optoelectronic repeater is a device that receives an optical signal, amplifies it and retransmits it.
