3M has introduced an Ultra-Hard Metric (UHM) socket that can deliver backplane speeds in excess of 7Gbps in systems based on 2mm hard metric connectors.

Available from distributor Toby Electronics, the parts are designed to enhance the performance of technologies such as VME and CompactPCI, while maintaining PCB footprint compatibility and intermateability.

The socket features 'virtual coax box' shielding that reduces the crosstalk commonly experienced by 2mm hard metric connectors operating at 1-1.5Gbps.

The UHM socket connector is designed to mate with 2mm hard metric IEC 61076-4-101 headers and is fully compatible with 2mm hard metric PCB footprints.

As a result, standard CompactPCI and VME 64x systems can support multi-gigabit, high-speed serial IO protocols such as SAS, SATA, Rapid IO, PCI Express and Gigabit Ethernet, without costly redesigns or upgrades.

For high signal density, five row and eight row form factors are available.

In addition, the socket supports 100 ohms differential pairs in rows and columns.
