Lanner Electronics has released two appliance platform models aimed at the high-end enterprise market segment, but at a mid-range price.

Lanner's two Xeon network appliance platforms, the FW-8881 and FW-8891, are designed as power and performance-optimised x86 hardware platforms for a range of enterprise-class network security applications such as gateway antivirus, firewall, unified threat management (UTM), and intrusion detection and prevention.

Two hot-swappable 3.5in hard drive trays provide scalable storage.

Features include redundant power supplies, modularised hardware components and software configurable fail-over and fail-through bypass options.

Both appliance platforms offer an optional embedded Cavium Nitrox security coprocessor for offloading compute-intensive security tasks.

Both systems provide the power of two dual-core or quad-core Intel Xeon CPUs in a 2U rackmount chassis - the FW-8881 built on the Intel 5100 chipset and the FW-8891 built on the Intel 5000 chipset.

They both also fit in the same modular chassis, which offers four standard GbE network ports plus two customisable network modules, providing a wide range of different speed, interface and bypass options - up to a maximum of 20 copper and fibre Ethernet ports.

Lanner has also released an eight-port network module for these high-end platforms, the IG802A, which provides eight copper GbE ports with bypass support.

Lanner now offers nine different network modules in different configurations for the FW-8881 and FW-8891 appliance platforms.
