Toshiba Electronics will launch the first in a series of high-capacity SD memory cards in November 2006.

The new 4Gbyte SDHC card and subsequent 8 and 16Gbyte SDHC planned for 2007 are designed to address the memory-hungry requirements of a new generation of audio, video and telecommunications devices.

The SD Card Association finalised the specification for high capacity SDHC cards in May 2006 and Toshiba is the first manufacturer to announce products conforming to the new specification.

The new cards are ideal for equipment requiring flexible, removable and high-capacity storage and transfer of video, audio and other high-volume data files using the memory-intensive FAT32 file system.

Featuring a maximum data transfer rate of 5Mbyte/s, the first cards in Toshiba's new SDHC range will be fully compliant with the SDA Speed Class 4 classification that supports a minimum data transfer rate of 4Mbyte/s.

The combination of capacity and high-speed operation means that the Toshiba cards will be particularly well suited to the recording and playback of MPEG2 and MPEG4 video in both standard and high-definition formats.

All of Toshiba's SDHC cards and associated packaging will be clearly marked with the SDHC logo and the SD Speed Class, allowing consumers to easily confirm that the cards are fully compatible with their SDHC-enabled equipment.
