Power controllers employ novel multimode control scheme for efficient operation across the entire load range.
New from Power Integrations is the Topswitch-HX family of AC/DC power conversion ICs.
Power Integrations introduced its original Topswitch product in 1994, combining a 700V switching power MOSFET with controller and supervisory functions into a single monolithic IC.
The Topswitch-HX family of ICs uses Power Integrations' EcoSmart energy-efficiency technology and combines great standby power performance with constant, high efficiency under all load conditions, enabling best-in-class efficiency over the entire load range.
Topswitch-HX enables power supply designs that easily meet proposed and existing energy standards such as CEC and Energy Star, while delivering up to 48W without the need for heatsinking (and up to 150W with a heatsink).
A new multimode control scheme provides highly efficient operation across the entire load range, eliminating the need for a separate standby power supply in some applications.
The control algorithm seamlessly transitions between different operating modes to optimize energy efficiency at all power levels, with the capability to deliver more than 600mW output for 1W input and a no-load power consumption of less than 200mW.
Also, a unique power coefficient (I2f) parameter greatly improves the output power limit accuracy and allows the designer to optimize the design of power-related components to further reduce system cost.

"With the best overall efficiency of any PWM flyback controller IC, Topswitch-HX performs excellently across the entire load range, eliminating the need for a separate standby power supply to meet 1W and other energy efficiency regulations".
The Topswitch-HX family of ICs offers a wide range of protection features, including: user-programmable latching or nonlatching output overvoltage shutdown OVP; line undervoltage (UV) detection to prevent turnoff glitches; line overvoltage (OV) shutdown, which extends the line surge limit; accurate, programmable current limits; optimised feed-forward for line ripple rejection; and an auto-restart function that delivers less than 3% of rated power in short-circuit conditions.
Major applications for the new Topswitch-HX include LCD monitors, high power adapters and chargers, high-efficiency PC standby, set top boxes, printers as well as for consumer and industrial applications.
Topswitch-HX is available in lead-free packaging.
Pricing in 1000-piece quantities for the TOP258PN, a 35W part in a DIP-8 package, is US $1.57 each.
Production quantities of TOP254-258 are available now in the following package types: DIP-8, SMD-8, TO-220, SDIP-10.
