Zarlink Semiconductor is supplying an ultra-low-power wireless chip designed specifically for ESL (electronic shelf label) systems to Swedish-based Pricer, a leading designer of retail electronic price and information technology.

Pricer was recently awarded a major contract by France-based supermarket chain Carrefour, the world's second largest retailer.

A Pricer ESL system ranges from a few hundred electronic shelf labels for a small store, to 70,000 labels for a large wholesale location.

Each electronic label includes a Zarlink ultra-low-power wireless SoC.

Pricer's ESL system includes electronic shelf labels wirelessly connected to a central pricing system via Zarlink's ultra-low-power SoC.

When the retailer changes the price of an item, the new pricing information is simultaneously transmitted to the electronic label and the cash register to ensure complete price integrity.

Using the wireless link, retailers can quickly and consistently update pricing information across entire store chains.

Electronic pricing systems reduce operating costs by eliminating the time required to manually update shelf labels.

"Retailers are demanding electronic price labels small enough to fit on any store shelf, with highly reliable operation to ensure customers pay the right price at the cash register", said Jan Forssjo, CEO, Pricer.

"Zarlink's ultra-low-power wireless technology has allowed Pricer to build a compact and cost-effective electronic price label with an average battery life of eight years".

Building on its ultra-low-power and wireless technologies, Zarlink is providing Pricer with a highly integrated SoC electronic label solution that combines several functions - a wireless receiver and transmitter, liquid crystal display driver, memory and more.

"Ultra-low-power wireless devices require reliability, compact size, and long operating life from available battery power", said Francois Pelletier, Product Line Director, Ultra Low-Power Communications, Zarlink Semiconductor.

"Our skills in ultra-low-power design, and strong relationships with market leaders such as Pricer, positions Zarlink as a dominant player in the growing commercial communications market where ultralow power consumption is required".
