Label technology specialist KSW Microtec is to use the Jewel chip from Innovision Research and Technology to deliver low-cost smart tickets in the mass transit sector.

Jewel is the smallest and lowest-cost RFID chip ever produced for ticketing and labelling applications, and is attracting intense interest from the mass transit sector.

Compatible with international transport ticketing standards - including ISO14443A and the UK transport standard ITSO version 2.1 - Jewel enables the deployment of extremely low-cost contactless tickets in smart card enabled public transportation systems.

"Jewel is one of the final pieces of the jigsaw enabling us to produce the RFID inlays for very low-cost mass transit tickets", said Dr Thomas Seidowski, CEO of KSW Microtec.

"Innovision R and T has made a real breakthrough in chip technology to produce Jewel at such low cost".

"We also expect to incorporate this technology in many other labelling applications".

"KSW Microtec's decision to use Jewel is a major step towards the worldwide adoption of RFID in mass transit smart tickets", said Marc Borrett, Managing Director of Innovision R and T.

"Transport operators see huge benefits in low-cost smart ticketing through decreased operating costs and increased efficiency".

"Contactless card reading offers a convenient method of fare-collection on bus, metro and train systems, resulting in shorter queues and enhanced safety for passengers".

Licensees of Jewel also include BemroseBooth (a subsidiary of Appleton Inc) and Giesecke and Devrient America.
