A new set-top box from leading Taiwanese original device manufacturer Wistron NeWeb Corp uses software from IntAct.

IntAct has announced that its software has been ported onto a set-top box (STB) designed by leading Taiwanese original device manufacturer (ODM), Wistron NeWeb Corp (WNC).

NXP is the newly independent semiconductor company founded by Philips and the STB design is based on NXP Semiconductors' STB810 reference design integrating the IntAct software stack with NXP's Nexperia home entertainment engine-PNX8950.

WNC's STB will allow Telcos in the emerging markets to license IntAct software and to deploy standard definition (SD) IPTV services at minimum cost.

By embedding the software from IntAct, already deployed in more than 700,000 STBs worldwide, WNC can offer its customers a product which is based on industry-proven technology.

Bob Giddy, CEO of Amino Technologies noted: "This is the first port of IntAct's proven software in a STB design from a company other than Amino Communications".

"The combination of the optimised IntAct software with a powerful silicon solution from NXP will enable WNC to bring a high-performance product to market rapidly".

"By using IntAct, WNC will eliminate the need for substantial R and D resources required to ensure such widespread interoperability with other elements of the IPTV supply chain".

According to a recent report from industry analysts, iSuppli, the global IPTV subscriber base will rise from 2.4 million in 2005 to 63.1 million in 2010.

Within the report, the most rapid growth in subscriber figures is predicted to take place in the Asia Pacific region.

"The availability of low-cost and highly reliable IPTV equipment will play a critical role in the rapid spread of IPTV services across both Asia and wider emerging markets", commented Menno Kleingeld, Senior Marketing Director STB and Home Media Devices, NXP Semiconductors.

"We are happy to be able to support WNC in their aim to be first to market with an attractive competitive alternative to the traditional local suppliers".

Haydn Hsieh, CEO and President of Wistron NeWeb Corp said: "By basing our design on the STB810 reference platform running the IntAct software, we have been able to produce a compelling product with a variety of configurations".

"Our customers in the emerging markets can now use equipment with widely proven software, at a cost that competes with the local big name manufacturers".

He continued: "Our customers will also be able to apply their own corporate branding to the equipment, thus making the link in consumers' minds between the service and the provider".
