C4Calculator is a novel tool that calculates current capacity for a given PCB track width and thickness.

PCB design bureau Black Stick will be giving away a novel software tool to National Electronics Week visitors who visit the company on Stand J45.

Called C4Calculator, the tool calculates current capacity for a given PCB track width and thickness.

Alan Graham, Director of the Stoke-on-Trent based design bureau, explains that the current carrying capability of printed circuit interconnect is defined by track width and thickness.

Black Stick's C4Calculator (current carrying capacity calculator) utility determines the optimum current based on a given interconnect width and thickness.

In addition, C4Calculator will also calculate the gap needed between conductors for a given voltage peak.

"C4Calculator is an invaluable tool that allows users to perform predesign studies on voltage and current", says Graham.

"Visitors to our stand at NEW can pick up the tool from us on a free CD".

All the calculations within the tool are taken from formulas and tables specified in the IPC-2222A standard.

C4Calculator also allows users to perform calculations beyond the scope of the IPC standard.

Black Stick plans to enhance the C4Calculator tool in the future to include track resistivity, capacitance, inductance and controlled impedance calculations.

"Adopters of the existing C4Calculator tool will be able to upgrade to the enhanced version without charge", Graham promises.

Black Stick can be seen at National Electronics Week (NEW) from 17th to 19th June at Earl's Court 2 on Stand J45.
