The smallest and lightest connector in the Souriau Autosport range is now available from authorised distributor BERU F1 Systems.

The smallest and lightest connector in the Souriau Autosport range is now available from authorised distributor BERU F1 Systems.

Smaller than the competition and derived from the Eurofighter military specification, the new Size Two offers wiring loom constructors lower weight and smaller size without the usual compromise in performance.

Specifically created for motorsport applications, the new connector encompasses the key Souriau features that are trusted by race and rally engineers around the globe.

The 100% scoop-proof design and a range of seven colour-coded keyways dramatically reduce mismatching and damage during assembly and servicing whilst an integrated back shell shrinks the package size, harness cost and overall weight: the male plug with contacts weighs a mere 1.65g compared with the current Size Four at 3.15g.

The package benefit is equally significant; the new connector is 2mm smaller in diameter and length making assembly servicing simpler.

In line with the latest motor sport trends the connector accepts lightweight 24-30AWG wire and there is no insertion tool required, simplifying assembly.

"This is what our customers are striving for", says BERU F1 Systems' Managing Director John Bailey.

"Lower weight, smaller size and no tradeoff in performance".

"With the V8 being introduced in F1 everyone is concerned about extra vibration".

"With an extensive testing programme in F1 on the dyno and track behind us we know that this product can meet the performance in the targeted applications".

The Size Two connector has been validated from -55 to +175C, 48-hour salt spray and water immersion at one metre for thirty minutes to ensure the product matches the performance of the current Size Four.

While its resistance to DOT5 brake fluid, competition oil and unleaded fuel are guaranteed through the use of an zinc-plated aluminium shell and gold-plated copper alloy contacts.

With three- and five-contact versions available, BERU F1 Systems foresees the range of applications to be significant; everything from potentiometers, speed sensors, Moog valves and data transmission to even higher current applications like solenoids and lights.

"If these are used in all the appropriate applications in the whole vehicle, the weight saving could be considerable", continues Bailey.

It will also make the technicians' and mechanics' lives a bit easier with colour-coded keyways and a little more space to work on the electrical systems".

The vehicle applications are expected to be equally diverse; there are already enquiries in F1, World Rally, MOTO GP and other single-seater series.

BERU F1 Systems continuing close relationship with Souriau means the new Size Two will be available directly from their recently opened in-house VAD assembly facility.

This sourcing route aims to dramatically reduce lead times to only a few days.
