The hot-swap supporting MIC-3680 brings the advantages of the CAN protocol to Advantech's CompactPCI systems.

Advantech has released its first CompactPCI CAN controller.

The hot-swap supporting MIC-3680 brings the advantages of the CAN protocol to Advantech's CompactPCI systems.

The combination of CAN and CompactPCI makes a rugged card for tough environments that have several features for better communication.

The MIC-3680 is a two-port CAN communication card with hot-swap support, and optical isolation up to 2500V DC.

The onboard CAN controllers are located at different positions, so the card can control two independent CAN networks simultaneously.

The main advantage of combining CompactPCI with CAN is realised when a mission-critical application is installed a rugged environment where economic and reliable long-distance communication is required.

CompactPCI is more serviceable than conventional PCs, especially when it supports hot-swapping like MIC-3680.

Better cooling and vibration resistance also makes CompactPCI suitable for hostile environments.

CAN supports multiple masters, so sensors and actuators provide real-time responses.

Bus arbitration and error detection with an automatic transmission repeat function are powerful add-on functions for mission-critical communication networks.

CAN also has higher noise immunity than serial communication, and supports communication up to 10km.

This makes CAN an economical alternative to fibre optic communications.

The combination of CAN and CompactPCI is considered useful in applications such as power stations, industrial automation systems, building automation and security systems.

MIC-3680 supports plug and play, which makes the card installation more convenient, and it can work together with robust fieldbus systems for remote input and output modules that are used for data transfers between PCs and network equipment.

MIC-3680 joins Advantech's other CAN cards - the PCL-841, PCM-3680 and PCI-1680U - which are cards in the ISA, PC/104 and PCI form factor, respectively.

To ease the integration of these CAN cards, or the migration from one form factor to another, the cards are software compatible and use the same pin assignment and connectors.
