Innovative system for teaching power electronics demonstrates applications such as various motors, uninterruptible power supplies and active filters.

Available now via Rapid Electronics, Semiteach IGBT is an innovative system for teaching power electronics.

Developed by Semikron, the world-leading manufacturer of power electronics, Semiteach provides a safe and highly effective learning environment.

When demonstrating the principles of power electronics, safety must be a prime concern.

Students with a lack of experience should be carefully introduced to live power.

A visual understanding is also important; students should be able to actually see the individual components of a system.

Semiteach does all this.

It demonstrates many applications of power electronics, such as single- and three-phase motors, DC current motors, uninterruptible power supplies and active filters.

Semiteach IGBT is designed to handle up to 30A RMS per phase.

The major power components and technical features are: three half-bridge modules with IGBT and CAL-diode - SKM 50 GB 123D; one IGBT brake chopper SKM 50 GAL 123D; a three-phase diode rectifier SKD 51/14; DC busbar capacitance of 110uF/800V; output power capability of up to 20kVA (three phase); switching frequency up to 20kHz; and a maximum input voltage of 480V AC three-phase (400V with filter).

Semiteach offers both passive and active safety.

The power convertor is protected by a clear plastic case on which all the standard safety connectors for power ("banana" connectors) and command (BNC type connectors) are fixed.

This case offers double IP protection.

The SKHI 22A driver protects the IGBTs against short circuits, undervoltage of the power supply, and simultaneous command of both IGBTs in one phase-leg.

Thermal sensing also prevents damage due to overheating.

Semikron's vast experience in industrial power design has provided a system suitable for teaching power electronics applications based on real world examples.

The Semiteach manual explains the components of the device, bringing the theory to life.

As a leader in power IGBT systems, Semikron ensures the quality of each Semiteach device by providing a manufacturing test certificate.

Every IGBT of each power stack is tested in short-circuit, at maximum voltage, and the complete stack is tested under full load conditions.
