A 'smart' battery charger that can automatically detect and charge eight to 15 NiMH or NiCD cells is being launched by Powersolve.

The PSCH30 Smart Charger can identify the number of cells in series, provide the necessary output to fully charge the cells and then turn itself off.

Output voltage, which varies depending on load, is from 9.6 to 18V and output current is from 500mA to 1.8A, which can be switched to charge at 0.9 or 1.8A.

Safety ground leakage current is less than 0.5mA.

The charger features a battery-temperature monitor with over-temperature shutdown.

Overvoltage and short-circuit protection are standard, as well as protection against reverse polarity.

An LED status indicator confirms standby, charging, fully charged and error states.

The PSCH30 features a universal AC input and incorporates an IEC320 C14 three-pin AC input connector.

Powersolve can supply a variety of optional DC output connectors to suit specific needs.

Housed in a compact desktop plastic enclosure measuring 120 x 60 x 38mm, the PSCH30 has an operating temperature range of 0 to 40C.

It also features compliance with all relevant international safety standards, as well as EMC compliance to EN55022 'B', CISPR 22 'B' and FCC Part 15 'B'.
