Nicomatic, which supplies to membrane switch manufacturers, has invested in specific light-emitting diodes (LEDs).

The so-called Ultrathin LEDs are dedicated to membrane switches already applied to medical equipment.

However, they are also used in any type of thin environment, 'green' products and flat cables for lighting connections.

It is also possible to match the low profile of the standard Ultrathin LED products with bi-colours.

Ultrathins reduce costs by eliminating embossing and lessening spacer materials while maintaining the size that they were developed for.

The 5mm SMT taping is much smaller than lead-frame-type components, thus enabling a smaller board size, a higher packing density and reduced storage space and equipment.

As they are lightweight, they are suitable for miniature applications such as backlighting in dashboards and switches, indicators and backlighting in telephones and faxes or remote control, flat backlights for LCDs.

The standard products are available in red/green, red/yellow and green/yellow on tape and reel (1210 package) in stock.

A hyper version has been introduced this year by Nicomatic in red and green, which features even brighter LEDs under part numbers ZHG55W-05 (160mcd) and ZHR55W-05 (50mcd).

A hyper blue colour (part number ZHB55W-05) is also available, which is the ruggedised version of the blue colour for electrostatic-discharge (ESD) protection.

Blues may be prone to ESD damage as the rating is only 150V ESD; the hyper blue itself, however, is rated at 1,000V ESD.

All are compatible with the infrared and vapour phase reflow solder processes.
