Hamamatsu Photonics has introduced the L10762 resonant-cavity LED for POF (Plastic Optical Fibre) data communication.

The L10762 is a red-emitting resonant-cavity LED that is said to offer seven times the fibre-end output power compared to conventional types, which is achieved by bonding a microball lens to the LED chip surface.

The microball lens increases the coupling efficiency to optical fibres by focusing the emitted light into the fibre.

The increase in fibre-end output power along with the high-speed response, 70MHz for a -3dB drop in signal and 660nm emitting wavelength make the L10762 suitable for use in POF data-communications networks.
