New from Advantech, the SOM-5780 is an embedded PCI Express reference board that fully complies with the PCI Express base specification revision 1.0a.

The SOM-5780 uses Advantech's own SOM-ETXexpress (a subset of COM Express) interface, an open PICMG standard.

As well as offering PCI Express support, SOM-5780 uses the Intel Pentium M processor that provides high performance and low power computing on a baseboard design of customer-specific application requirements.

"The SOM-ETXexpress series expands on Advantech's existing SOM-144, SOM-ETX and SOM-ETXplus solutions by giving customers innovation for their current and future embedded applications".

"Customers not only want the newest technology like PCI Express, but need their current applications supported equally as well", said Jeff Chen, Advantech Chief Technology Officer.

Following the continued broad adoption of PCI Express in the consumer desktop market, the modular, high bandwidth, low pin count connector, is a natural fit for embedded applications requiring higher bandwidth like communications and applications with broadcast/multicast support.

In a form factor of 95 x 125mm, the SOM-5780 provides a scalable high performance and easy to integrate solution for customers' applications by using a plug-in CPU module on an application-specific customer solution board.

The SOM-5780 with advanced I/O capacity and PCI Express interfaces joins the Advantech SOM product family to offer ODM embedded integrators more choices for their own applications needing higher computing speeds while maintaining a compact form factor.

The SOM-ETXexpress series are backward compatible platforms for many existing PCI-based hardware and software systems.

They are fully scalable for upgrades or changing application needs and feature long life support so important to embedded developers.

Combining Advantech's design to order service (DTOS) with in-house software development team and global logistics and support, system-on-module products are ideal for a semicustom solution, streamlining the product development process.

The SOM-5780 is due out early in Q2 2005.
