The patented FMCU series offers an easy transition from video games to military applications providing military personnel with the ability to move freely in the field.

Manning and controlling modern military electronic systems may be no Game Boy but the new, rugged, dual-handle control unit from Ultra Electronics MSI certainly makes it easier as it is designed to suit a generation that cut its teeth on joysticks and game controls.

Using a control layout similar to those used in video game controllers, the patented FMCU series (Freedom of Movement Control Unit) offers an easy transition from video games to military applications providing military personnel with the ability to move freely in the field without being restricted by a mounted controller.

This new generation of joystick control brings efficient and highly effective operation to the complex task of controlling both manned and unmanned military vehicles and equipment while increasing operator comfort and reducing training time.

Lightweight and rugged, the FMCU features Ultra Electronics MSI's patented, miniature Hall-effect joystick technology.

The noncontacting design provides a more accurate and consistent signal to the operator over the full life span of the product that is up to 20 million cycles.

Apart from increasing reliability the removal of all moving parts, except the stick itself, increases linearity, reduces hysteresis and makes it immune to water, dirt, dust, lubricants, shock and vibration.

These factors make it the only miniature displacement style joystick that meets the performance requirements of the demanding military market.

The FMCU has a rugged aluminium-cast housing with a removable aluminium switch plate and is fitted with impact and temperature resistant plastisol coated handles.

It is available in two sizes, with the standard unit measuring approximately 152 x 168 x 57mm and the larger unit measuring 165 x 190 x 89mm.

The standard FMCU incorporates two patented Model 5000 joysticks, two single detent triggers, a rugged four-way switch and ten sealed momentary pushbuttons.

These modules are removable and interchangeable to enable the base unit to remain a common controller that can easily be configured to suit different applications.

Options available include handle mounted dead-man switches and bespoke coil cords, cables and connectors.

Applications will include all types of weaponry control and the FMCU series is also ideal for use in the robotics, medical, mobile hydraulics, unmanned vehicle control and industrial process control sectors.
