The NCP1501 is the second device in a series of dual-mode PWM buck convertors that feature a low dropout mode.

Addressing the need for highly efficient voltage regulation within portable electronics, the NCP1501 is the second device in a series of dual-mode PWM buck convertors that feature a low dropout (LDO) mode This new device is ideal for the power management of portable applications including cellular phones, PDAs, digital cameras, and supplies for DSP cores

High-efficiency voltage conversion is maintained throughout the range of operating conditions by using PWM mode for normal- to high-current loads, then switching to LDO mode during very light loads to eliminate quiescent current of the PWM, switching losses, and noise.

This convertor has four, digitally selectable, fixed output voltages (1.05, 1.35, 1.57 and 1.8V).

The integrated mosfets, current ramps and compensation techniques of the NCP1501 simplify the circuit board design of power-management systems that drive portable devices.

The component also features overvoltage, current limit and thermal protection circuits for system safety.

"The patented, programmable, PWM and LDO dual-mode architecture of the NCP1501 offers designers the advantage of highly efficient power system performance during both full load and stand-by operating conditions", said Andy Khayat, ON Semiconductor Product Marketing Director for analogue products.

"With this fully integrated solution, portable hardware designers don't need to be power supply experts in order to optimise power efficiency, board space and circuit operation".

The NCP1501 will supply up to 300mA to the load, meeting the requirements of most portable equipment microprocessor cores and baseband processors.

In PWM mode, the NCP1501 accepts a synchronization clock signal between 500kHz and 1MHz.

Built-in synchronous rectification - a feature not found in the NCP1500 - provides high efficiency (up to 92.5%) for medium to high loads.

The integrated slope compensation circuit, feedback circuit and mosfets significantly reduce the external part count.

The NCP1501's linear mode provides a significantly lower quiescent current and exhibits virtually no noise on the output compared with competing devices that use pulse frequency modulation (PFM) mode.

With an input voltage range of 2.7 to 5.2V, the device is able to operate directly from a single-cell lithium-ion (Li+) battery or a three-cell nickel metal hydride (NiMH) battery.

Additionally, the device features a shutdown pin and digitally programmable voltage selection that enables designers to set the output voltage to 1.05, 1.35, 1.57 or 1.8V.

The 1.05V option ensures that the NCP1501 is properly configured for the core voltage needs of next-generation designs.

During shutdown, quiescent current is 0.2uA - significantly conserving battery life.

Also, the NCP1501 allows the use of ceramic capacitors and low profile inductors to optimise the design.

The NCP1501 is offered in a space-saving 3 x 5mm Micro-8 package.

It is priced at $1.10 per unit in 4000-unit quantities.
