Buffalo Technology has just announced its new high-speed version of the AirStation wireless networking system operating at 22Mbit/s - twice as fast as competing products

It has also announced several enhancements and additions to its existing 11Mbit/s family of AirStation products, making Buffalo the most comprehensive supplier into the wireless LAN market. The new WLA-T22G access point is fully compatible with the IEEE 802.11b wireless standard and is based on packet binary convolutional code (PBCC), which provides a datarate up to 22Mbit/s.

This bridge type access point supports IEEE 802.3 10BaseT and 100BaseTX ports for easy interfacing to any Ethernet network.

Like other Buffalo access points, it uses simple web browser configuration to provide several levels of security, including 128bit WEP (wired equivalency privacy algorithm) and MAC address restrictions, providing the robustness and roaming features required for business.

The WLI-CB-T22G is a complementary 22Mbit/s PCMCIA wireless LAN card that can be used in any Type II cardbus slot.

'We are expecting these exciting announcements to increase our penetration in the SME market', says Julie Boyle, Sales Manager for Buffalo Technology.

'We will also be putting some new packages together to help the independent retailers to win additional wireless business in the SOHO and gaming sectors'.

It is expected that the new 22Mbit/s products will appeal to the SME and higher-end SOHO market, where the faster transmission rates will enhance productivity.

Some models in the current 11Mbit/s family will now be priced even more aggressively to appeal to the home user and gaming community.

The Buffalo Airstation family is one of the few wireless solutions to fully support peer-to-peer networking, making it easy for end users to set up flexible gaming groups.

The WLA-T22G is fully compatible with the existing range of 11Mbit/s AirStation products, which will now be enhanced to 128bit WEP.

In this family, Buffalo offer five different access points to cater for different market segments, including a basic 10/100 bridge type, plus models with built in 57kbit/s modem, ADSL/cable modem, ADSL modem/ local router and ISDN plus router types.

The 11Mbit/s AirStation range conforms to IEEE 802.11b specifications and has several other certifications including Wi-Fi.

Buffalo already offers adapters for both PCI and ISA buses allowing the AirStation system to be used with any computer.

A recent addition to the range is a USB adapter, the WLI-USB-L11, a plug and play USB wireless transceiver providing an even more flexible and easy-to-use solution to connect any portable or desktop PC into a wireless network.
