Buffalo Technology has released a new version of its PCMCIA wireless networking interface card with several new features

The WLI-PCM-L11GP is a type 2 PC Card that can be used with any compatible portable computer or the company's own PCI or ISA adapters for desktop machines. The new card features a slimline antenna section, making it easier to use adjacent to other cards in machines with two slots. The antenna also has a pair of holes through it providing a means of physical security (pat pending) against unauthorised removal of the card.

Based on the latest Agere (Lucent) chipset, the WLI-PCM-L11GP conforms to IEEE802.11b specifications and is capable of wireless communications in the 2.4GHz band at up to 11Mbit/s.

This product is WiFi approved guaranteeing interoperability with other wireless LAN products.

Range is estimated to be 115m outdoors and 60m indoors, with bandwidth and range reducing where obstructions are encountered, as with other products in its class.

The antenna on this card has a socket to allow the use of additional directional or omnidirectional antennas in the Buffalo product range to improve signal strength in difficult environments, such as offices with numerous metal filing cabinets, steel framed buildings, and so on.

Wireless security is provided at a number of levels, including support for 128/40bit WEP encryption and a hard wired MAC address unique to each card.

Like Buffalo's other wireless interfaces, this card can be used for remote access to existing LANs or the Internet via a suitable access point, or can be used for peer-to peer networking without the use of a basestation or access point.
