Single 32bit chip
mops up multiprocessor designs

The MPC5200 combines low power, high performance and a broad range of input/output in a single, cost-effective package

The MPC5200 combines low power, high performance and a broad range of input/output (I/O) in a single, cost-effective package. This 32bit embedded processor makes the elimination of multiple processors in designs possible, and provides ample headroom for product upgrades and differentiation. The MPC5200 is designed to greatly improve performance in applications such as gateways, industrial controllers, telematics, global positioning systems, instrumentation and data image processing devices.

Networking and industrial control design engineers can now take full advantage of the success of the MPC5200 in the automotive market, where long-term product availability is a requirement.

'Based on the new MPC5200, we are currently developing an advanced 3D camera for vehicle occupant monitoring in smart airbag systems', said Christian Kuhrt, Manager Camera Systems at Siemens VDO Automotive, division Restraint Systems Safety Electronics.

'We are extensively utilising the exceptional processor features, such as the huge processing power and flexible high-speed communication interface, as well as the enhanced ambient temperature capability'.

The 400MHz MPC5200 contains a PowerPC 603e core.

The processor includes a floating point unit (FPU) that delivers 760MIPS while consuming less than 850mW of power.

Its robust I/O and processing power help eliminate the need for separate controllers.

For tasks such as voice recognition or intensive data processing, it can eliminate the need for a DSP.

'We needed a highly integrated microprocessor from a supplier that clearly understood the details of the I/O drivers, development platforms and nuances of integrating voice recognition and wireless technologies into our product', said Ken Rudnick, Vice President of Intetronics, Lear Corporation, Interior Systems Division.

'Motorola was really the only vendor whose solution - the MPC5200 - could meet this demand'.

Manufactured in a 0.13-micron process and housed in a compact 272-pin package, the processor was designed for high data throughput.

The MPC5200 also offers exceptional flexibility via support for numerous automotive and general networking functions including Ethernet, USB 1.1 Host, CAN 2.0, J1850 BDLC-D, PCI, ATA, I2S, I2C and SPI.

An integrated SDRAM interface supports 133MHz double datarate (266MHz effective) memories.

The chip's BestComm DMA controller largely offloads most data transfer operations from the main processor core, further boosting the chip's performance.

The 400MHz MPC5200 has extended temperature capabilities from -40 to +85C.

With a foundation in the automotive/telematics market via the mobileGTT Alliance and platform, the MPC5200's extended temperature capabilities are well suited for nonautomotive applications including industrial control.

'The MPC5200 combines a high level of integration with a variety of communication peripherals', said Peter Stemer, Instrument Control Manager at Agilent Technologies.

'These features, paired with high processing performance and low power over the extended temperature range, give us the flexibility needed for our industrial control platform'.

To help customers streamline time-to-market, Motorola supports the new device with a choice of comprehensive development platforms.

The cost-effective Lite5200 evaluation board (EVB) kit is ideal for customers wanting to quickly develop their own hardware solutions with the MPC5200.

This kit includes evaluation-version board support packages (BSPs) for Green Hills Software's Integrity and QNX Neutrino RTOS.

Support for MontaVista Linux software, OSE Systems and Wind River VxWorks platforms are scheduled to become available in the coming weeks.

A 30-day licence of Metrowerks CodeWarrior IDE (integrated development environment) and two emulation probes are included.

The comprehensive Total5200 development platform is well suited for rapid prototyping.

This system offers robust I/O expansion, an integrated LCD with touch screen and a full Bluetooth wireless technology audio subsystem.

Also available on the Total 5200 development platform are the QNX Neutrino RTOS and IBM WebSphere support for the Java programming language, as well as Clarity CVC, Fonix embedded speech, IBM embedded ViaVoice and Wavemaker's ClearStream speech recognition solutions.

The MPC5200 400MHz extended temperature device is now sampling.

Production quantities are planned for late 2003 with a suggested retail price of US $22.50 in 10,000-piece quantities.

A 264MHz version operating in the -40 to +105C range is planned.

Additional lower temperature and lower frequency parts are planned for introduction in 2004.

The Lite5200 EVB kit and Total5200 development platform are available today and suggested resale prices start at US $995 and $5000, respectively.
