Designed to provide ESD protection for the USB interface in applications such as PCs, PDAs, digital cameras and mobile phones, it positively adds to AVX's proven multilayer varistor technology and is part of the company's expansion of its TransGuard product line. The "USB varistor" features low capacitance to minimise signal distortion and can provide ESD protection at up to 25kV.
The multilayer design with its many thousands of PN junctions means that it can survive in excess of 1000 strikes at 25kV.
Typically the single junction design of diodes means they are less able to survive the high-voltage and surge current seen during a transient event.
This leads to failure after a relatively few number of ESD events.

The "USB varistor" offers superior electrical performance over diode-based solutions and will be a valuable tool for design engineers.
Paul Sayer, European Product Marketing Manager for Circuit Protection Products at AVX said: "We are pleased to be globally launching this part with Future electronics as their technical expertise and access to customers will ensure that OEMs will be able to rapidly and effectively integrate the "varistor" into their designs".
Gurjit Gill, Techical Director for Europe at Future Electronics added: "The "USB varistor" is an exciting addition to our product range as we already distribute complimentary products such as USB chipsets from other manufacturers".
A single USB series device can achieve the same results as one or more diodes in conjunction with an EMC capacitor and a resistor.
Eliminating the need for multiple devices, the USB series can save designers component and placement costs especially when arrays are used.
Parts are available as 0603 standard case size, 0405 two-varistor array, and 0612 four-varistor array.
Samples are available from Future on request.
