CSR tops 50 million Bluetooth chips

CSR has shipped 50 million Bluetooth chips since its foundation

CSR's landmark shipment figures indicate that Bluetooth technology is now well established, and recent forecasts indicate that the market is flourishing. CSR's Bluetooth silicon, called BlueCore, is integrated into mobile devices made by many leading names in the electronics industry including Nokia, IBM, Motorola and Sony.

As Stuart Carlaw, Group Manager for the Wireless Communications Group at IMS Research, pointed out: 'CSR is the leading supplier of Bluetooth IC solutions to the market'.

As one of the first players in the Bluetooth wireless technology arena, CSR has built a strong reputation for innovation and has been heavily involved in working from within the Bluetooth Special Interest Group.

This collaboration has helped strengthen the technology to the point of maturation that Bluetooth represents today.

According to IMS Research, over 3 million Bluetooth devices are currently shipping each week.

Today, CSR has a silicon volume share of 42% with share of end product design wins exceeding 60%.

The Bluetooth SIG announced Bluetooth EDR (enhanced datarate) in June 2004, widening the potential applications for the technology, and further strengthening the market.

CSR launched BlueCore4, its EDR ready silicon, at the same time.

EDR offers lower power consumption and data transfer rates three-times faster than current v1.2 Bluetooth.

These enhancements in Bluetooth EDR mean that applications such as wirelessly streaming music from a PC to Bluetooth headphones, or high-resolution picture exchange between mobile phones, can all be achieved faster, more efficiently, and with lower power consumption.

John Hodgson, Chief Executive Officer, CSR commented: 'It is interesting to see the spread of devices that now incorporate Bluetooth technology: from top-of-the-range cars, right across to mainstream electronics devices'.

'CSR's landmark 50 million shipment figure is indicative of the growing infusion of Bluetooth technology in consumer electronics, including mobile handsets, PDAs and laptop computers'.

Hodgson continued: 'The burgeoning sales figures of Bluetooth headsets in particular indicate that consumers are definitely using the Bluetooth functionality of their mobile handsets, which can also be used for connections such as synchronising address books with a laptop, PDA or in-car hands-free kit'.
