Platform discovers microcontroller designs
Anglia has introduced a complete low-cost development platform for the STR71xF series of microcontrollers
The Columbus evaluation board has been designed by Anglia's in-house team of engineers and programmers, and uses an open design featuring an imported version of the GCC toolchain, supplied free of charge, which is not code limited and can be customised by the user. The Columbus STR71x evaluation board is a complete development platform for the latest STR71xF series of 64-pin ARM core microcontrollers from ST Microelectronics, which are also distributed by Anglia.

The board provides a cost effective, flexible and open design that enables the rapid evaluation of the microcontroller device and available peripherals.
The Columbus board is available in a choice of two versions, with different models of the TQFP64 (10 x 10) packaged microcontroller onboard.
The USB version incorporates the STR711FR2T6, and the CAN version contains the STR712FR2T6.
Both are highly integrated microcontrollers with an embedded ARM7TDMI core and are compatible with all ARM tools and software.
Both models feature an extensive range of onboard peripherals including 256Kbyte of internal Flash memory and 64Kbyte of RAM.

The board also includes 2Mbyte serial Flash on the SPI bus and 1Kbyte EEPROM on the I2C bus.
They also integrate a 2 x 16 LCD, LED displays, dual UART, test buttons, an analogue input and either CAN or USB interfaces to create a versatile stand-alone test platform.
An ADC input and speaker are also included.
The board has 30/32 I/O ports and has 5, 3.3 and 1.8V DC supplies set up to enable the use of the embedded voltage regulator or to run the microcontrollers in shutdown or low power modes.
A host parallel cable and RS232 are supplied, along with a USB cable for the USB version.
The pack also includes a mains-powered 9V power supply and a software CD-ROM.
A 'Wiggler' compatible JTAG interface is built on to the main board, and provides an in-circuit debugging facility.
The JTAG interface can be removed if required and used to program a separate target board.
The imported GCC toolchain Gnu software compiler aids rapid development and helps keep costs to a minimum.
The toolchain is not code limited and requires only free online registration by the user.
ST's own toolchain has also been ported to the device.
The hardware platform is supported by an extensive software package including device drivers and libraries in C source code and demonstration software.
It is flashed with a demonstration application that shows the basic features of the microcontrollers.
Development tools are free and readily available online.
The Columbus platform is available now from Anglia and is priced at GBP 199.99.
