The latest Ultracapacitor from Maxwell Technologies offers 10F capacitance to provide devices such as digital cameras with higher levels of power than are possible with batteries alone.

Young Electronics Group has added the PC10 Ultracapacitor from Maxwell Technologies to its portfolio.

The PC10 is based on the same Boostcap technology as the PC5, but offers 10F capacitance, compared with 4F for the PC5.

Designed to provide devices such as digital cameras with higher levels of power than are possible with batteries alone, the high capacitance enables designers to develop hybrid power solutions with cost and performance benefits over nonhybrid systems.

The PC10 is constructed from stainless steel and is hermetically sealed.

Operating at 2.5V it has a rated current of 2.5A.

It has an electrostatic capability of over 500,000 duty cycles a weight of 6.4g and dimensions of 29.6 x 23.6 x 4.8mm.

The PC10 can operate in a temperature range of -40 to 70C.

As well as consumer electronics, the PC10 is suitable for applications such as wireless transmission, medical devices, automatic meter readings and other applications where a pulse of electricity is needed.

Moreover, its steel housing and the relatively low amount of electrolyte, compared to the volume of housing, makes the PC10 available for higher temperatures and as such suitable for automotive applications as well.

The PC10 offers a more efficient means of power delivery than can be provided by a battery or power source alone.

In many applications both pulse power and a constant low power discharge are required.

In these circumstances the PC10 can operate in a hybrid system with a battery.

With batteries relieved of having to provide peak power functions, battery life can be extended and both the battery size and cost can be reduced.

The PC10 can also offer an effective means of back up power.

Its rapid charge and discharge means it can keep critical functions operating during power outages.

With no chemical reactions, the PC10 is capable of more than 500,000 duty cycles and Maxwell guarantees a 10 year life capability.

While battery replacement is routine maintenance, PC10 Ultracapacitors are installed for the life of the system.
