RISC processor takes
audio codec onboard
Toshiba is offering a new implementation of its TX49xx chip family with the Spirit MP3 encoder/decoder optimised for audio platforms
The TX49xx 64bit, MIPS-based processor family has been created for high-end, performance-demanding applications in the consumer electronics market. Having MP3 software optimised for the TX49xx processors simplifies the development of solutions for a variety of audio applications including portable and car audio systems, wireless communication systems, set-top boxes, Internet appliances and MP3 PDA players.

The Spirit MP3 codec algorithm provides MPEG1 and MPEG2 decoding and Spirit's low bitrate extension MPEG 2.5 for Layer 3 streams.
Spirit middleware is ideally suited to multimedia devices combining high sound quality and low processor requirements.
The codec has been developed by Spirit together with Toshiba engineers, and the software is highly optimised for the TX49xx family.
This processor family can simultaneously encode and decode at any bitrate, while still providing significant performance for other tasks.
"Our co-operation has just started and Toshiba Electronics Europe and Spirit are now copromoting this solution for the audio entertainment market", comments Reiner Tervrde at Toshiba Electronics Europe.
"Spirit's experience in integration and framework development helps OEMs to deliver TX49xx-based customer applications and save time to market", adds Tervrde.
"As a result of the Toshiba-Spirit co-operation, TX49xx functionality has been extended to make it more attractive for the consumer electronics market", says Andrew Sviridenko, founding CEO of Spirit.
