A new high-density and low-profile 48V power supply is designed to maximise valuable space available for customers' revenue generating equipment while delivering maximum power.

Tyco Electronics Power Systems has unveiled the first power supply in its Compact Power Line (CPL) platform, the CP1800AC52, a high-density and low-profile 48V power supply designed for minimal space utilisation to maximise valuable space available for customers' revenue generating equipment while delivering maximum power.

Built with nWave, Tyco's digital-control technology using DSPs, the CP1800AC52 is billed as offering improved efficiency, reliability, density and control.

The CP1800AC52 is a 48V constant-power power supply that provides 1200W from 100-120V AC and 1800W from 200-240V AC; it is designed to operate from worldwide power sources and will deliver power with voltage surges up to 300V AC.

The power supply sports an impressive power density of 20W/in3 at 1800W and measures 43 x 102 x 352mm.

The power supply provides a constant-power output from 48-58V DC and the output voltage may be reset anywhere from 44 to 58V DC either through analogue or digital means.

Thermal protection, DC output overvoltage, overcurrent and short-circuit protection, AC input overvoltage and undervoltage protection and variable-speed fans are all standard features.

An auxiliary 5V output at 5W is also provided.

The CP1800AC52 comes with a full complement of analogue alarms and control features, allowing it to be used in many standard applications.

It can be used to provide digital information through communication buses such as PMBus/SMBus without the need for a separate microprocessor, making it applicable for mid- to high-end server and storage applications.

In addition, the CP1800AC52 includes an RS485 communications bus for use with Tyco battery-plant controllers as part of an energy reserve system for wireless, broadband and telecomms applications.

The CP1800AC52 also includes 2250V DC isolation from the main output to chassis and signal lines so that it can be used in PoE applications.

The CP1800AC52 power supply may be imbedded into the end-use application or used with the complementary 1U CP shelf that supports up to four power supplies.

The CP shelf has dimensions of 43 x 427 x 412mm.

Movable mounting ears allow it to be used in flush or mid-mount applications and it may also be removed to allow the shelf to be imbedded directly into the end-use equipment chassis.

"Customers looking for standard power solutions as opposed to initiating a custom development will find the flexible and scalable CPL platform to be a viable and economical alternative", says Sabi Varma, Vice President, Marketing and R and D at Tyco Electronics Power Systems.
