Saft to present lithium batteries at Electronica
Saft, a designer and manufacturer of high-tech batteries for industry, will present two lithium batteries for electronics applications at Electronica 2008.
They are the MP 176065 HD Integration, a high drain version of the MP Integration series rechargeable Li-ion (lithium-ion) cells, and the LS 14500 primary lithium cell, now upgraded to offer a capacity of 2.6Ah.
The MP 176065 HD is an extension of the existing MP (Medium Prismatic) Integration series of Li-ion cells and delivers the high power and long cycle life demanded by high drain applications such as rack-mount telecom backup power, AEDs (automated external defibrillators), small UPS and electric actuators.
The result is the MP 176065 HD Integration cell, with a specific power of 1000W/kg, which can provide a maximum continuous discharge current of 45A and pulses up to 65A.
The MP 176065 HD cell offers a cycle life of more than 1500 charge/discharge cycles when operating at up to 100W.
The MP 176065 HD integrates easily with rechargeable battery packs used in modern military and professional applications.
The cell facilitates either parallel or series connection.
In many cases the high nominal capacity (3.6Ah) provided by individual cells will eliminate the need to connect two or more cells in parallel.
This reduction in cell-to-cell wiring will help reduce pack-assembly costs and increase reliability.
The nominal capacity of Saft's LS 14500 lithium-thionyl chloride (Li-SOCl2) cylindrical AA-size cells has been increased to 2.6Ah.
The life of a primary cell is directly linked to its capacity.
So this increase from the LS 14500's previous 2.45Ah capacity offers six per cent extra battery life.
The cell has a nominal voltage of 3.6V, provides a continuous current of 70mA with pulses up to 280mA and can operate over a temperature range of -60C to +85C.
The LS 14500 has a self-discharge rate of less than one per cent after one year of storage at +20C.
Saft LS 14500 primary lithium cells are suited for: utility metering, automatic meter reading, alarms and security devices, tollgate systems, memory back-up, tracking systems, automotive electronics and professional electronics.
