Synopsys has released version 3.7 of its two popular FPGA synthesis solutions - FPGA Compiler II and FPGA Express

Synopsys has released version 3.7 of its two popular FPGA synthesis solutions-FPGA Compiler II and FPGA Express. This new release offers enhancements that make designing FPGAs easier by increasing both language and scripting flexibility and adding support for the latest programmable logic devices from Altera and Xilinx.

Version 3.7 is also the final release of FPGA Express, which was previously available only in Altera and Xilinx OEM kits.

As Synopsys completes its transition from OEM to direct sales, FPGA Compiler II will supercede FPGA Express.

When upgrading to FPGA Compiler II, FPGA Express customers benefit from advanced functionality for high-end design, product updates and world-class support.

"We are seeing more of our core synthesis customers using FPGAs and we're increasing our investment in FPGA synthesis correspondingly", said Sanjiv Kaul, vice president and general manager of the Synopsys Physical Synthesis Business Unit.

"With the final release of the OEM version, we can more directly focus on the needs of our customers and provide high-quality design tools such as version 3.7 to enhance productivity".

Version 3.7 of FPGA Compiler II and FPGA Express brings designers enhanced Verilog support and an improved command shell.

In addition, this version of FPGA Compiler II extends its unique capability of handling elements from the DesignWare library to further aid designers who use FPGAs as prototypes for ASICs.

With a new User's Guide to complement the existing Design Wisard, FPGA Compiler II offers a quick start for both graphic user interface and scripting-oriented FPGA designers.

In keeping with Synopsys' commitment to provide high-quality support for the latest in high-end devices, FPGA Compiler II includes specialised algorithms for the Altera Stratix and Xilinx VirtexII Pro families of devices.

"Version 3.7 of FPGA Compiler II extends Synopsys synthesis capabilities specifically for Altera's new leading-edge Stratix device family", said Tim Southgate, vice president of software and tools marketing at Altera.

"This is one more step in our on-going alliance with Synopsys to deliver advanced tools and flows for design and verification of large, complex programmable logic devices for system-on-a-programmable-chip designs".

"Xilinx is continuing to build on six years of strong partnership with Synopsys", said Rich Sevcik, senior vice president of FPGA products, Xilinx "Engineers from both companies worked together behind the scenes to bring designers version 3.7 with Synopsys optimisation algorithms tailored for our high-performance Virtex-II Pro device.

We look forward to additional cooperative efforts in the future".

Synopsys will provide additional functionality enhancements and device support as ongoing updates to FPGA Compiler II.

FPGA Express customers can upgrade to FPGA Compiler II by contacting their Synopsys account manager or visiting the Synopsys website.

Current FPGA Compiler II customers can download the version 3.7 update from the website.
