Big Flash device
leads microcontroller fleet
The H8S/2378F is the latest flagship 16bit H8S microcontroller from Renesas Technology Europe, supported by a vast range of hardware and software options
These include a full suit of Gnu C compiler, application builder and Flash programming software, which are all free of charge. The new device features the industry's leading memory and peripheral integration as well as high CPU performance. It also implements the company's latest embedded Flash technology, metal oxide nitride oxide silicon (MONOS) Flash structure, which makes large-size embedded Flash more affordable than ever before and supports fast code execution.

The H8S/2378F offers 512Kbyte of MONOS Flash and 32Kbyte of RAM combined with a rich peripheral set and 15DMIPS CPU performance.
The new device is ideal for demanding consumer and industrial applications such as electronic point of sales (ePOS), heating ventilation and air conditioning, home and factory automation, security systems and others.
It is available in a lead-free and RoHS compliant package.
The peripheral set includes three different DMA-type modules.
These are a four-channel standard DMA, the flexible data transfer controller (DTC) and the EXDMA specialised in transfers on the external buses.

The device incorporates five serial ports all of which support async, sync and ISO7816, as well as IrDA on one channel.
There is also support for two channels of IIC.
The ADC has 16 channels of 10bit resolution and converts as fast as 8.1us.
The DAC has six channels of 8bit resolution.
There are eight timers with a total of 18 input-capture/output-compare registers.
A programmable pulse generator (PPG) can drive data patterns onto up to 16 pins under timer control to generate a 16 channel stream of data patterns without jitter, as would be the case if interrupt services were used.
The H8S/2378F also supports up to 113 IO lines.
A microcontroller with such a large amount of Flash memory and peripheral integration solves many issues designers face today.
It allows the development of sophisticated systems that are fast, compact, reliable, easy to develop and to build.
It also incurs lower cost than systems with similar functionality based on older microcontrollers that may have required external memories.
To help with the development of projects of any size and complexity, Renesas Technology and its network of partners offer numerous support options, ranging from a low cost evaluation board (EDK2378) via on-chip-debug tools (E10A, Trace32-ICD) to the highest specification real-time emulators (E6000 from Renesas, Trace32-Fire from Lauterbach).
Beyond the renowned Renesas Technology C compiler, there is support from IAR and KPIT (a free Gnu compiler).
A MakeApp application builder and Flash programming software (FDT) are available free of charge.
Several operating systems are also available, as are development resources and online training.
The H8S/2378F is available immediately in a lead-free (RoHS compliant) 144-pin QFP package and comes in two versions, with and without additional SDRAM interface (R-version).
Part names are HD64F2378VFQ34V and HD64F2378RVFQ34V, respectively.
