A new family of 8bit microcontrollers requires 50% less power than competing devices, making them ideal for handheld portable devices

A new family of 8bit microcontrollers from Philips requires 50% less power making them ideal for handheld portable devices. The new 80C51X2 family of microcontrollers support both 6- and 12-clock operation, and performs over a wide operating range of 2.7 to 5.5V with up to 50% less power consumption when compared with the original 12-clock 80C51 family.

The introduction of the new 80C51X2 family supports Philips' number one position in 8bit microcontrollers offering the industry's most robust portfolio of high performance 80C51 devices.

By supporting 6-clock operation to an oscillator frequency of 30MHz, the 80C51X2 performance range is extended to approximately twice the original 80C51 maximum performance.

This lets designers stay with the 80C51 in applications requiring higher performance without having to change architectures.

Additionally, selecting the 6-clock mode benefits the design by improving electromagnetic compatibility (EMC), reducing power consumption and lowering system cost.

The 80C51X2 family is based on a high-performance static CMOS 80C51 design making it ideal for low-power, low-voltage systems.

Two software selectable modes of power reduction, either idle or power-down, help designers optimise the microcontroller for ultra low power operation.

The idle mode freezes the CPU while allowing the RAM, timers, serial port, and interrupt system to continue functioning.

The power-down mode saves the RAM contents but freezes the oscillator, causing all other chip functions (except response to external interrupts/reset) to be inoperative.

Because the design is static, the clock can be stopped without loss of user data and the execution can be resumed from the point when the clock was stopped.

These features offer great flexibility in handheld portable applications.

The family of 80C51X2 is suitable for a wide range of applications and consists of 14 microcontrollers which includes ROMless devices and devices with up to 32Kbyte of ROM, Flash or one time programmable memory.
