The MPC53x series of MCUs was developed for system designers needing a high-performance architecture for a growing range of cost-sensitive, real-time control applications

The latest members of the family - the MPC533, MPC534, MPC535 and MPC536 - feature a PowerPC core, a dual precision floating point unit for intensive calculations and up to 1Mbyte of on-chip Flash memory for the exceptional performance for which the MPC500 family is known around the world. These new devices offer a reduced peripheral set from other members of the family, while still providing the functionality needed for complex applications in an easy to use and cost effective device.

The new family of products is targeted at more computationally intensive control and automation applications, such as networking service processors, industrial control and health care diagnostic equipment.

Service processors monitor and regulate the environmental operating conditions of high-end servers, storage devices and networking appliances.

They perform a variety of functions including temperature monitoring, intrusion detection and system load management.

For industrial control, these devices can be used in robotic machinery or equipment, including ovens used in the manufacturing process.

Health care equipment may also benefit from these products, which can be used in diagnostic equipment and drug dispensing/IV control.

"The new MPC53x devices have been developed for customers who want the performance of high-end devices but may not need all of the I/O capabilities that some of our other MPC500 family MCUs offer", said Dr Franz Fink, Vice President and General Manager of Motorola's 32bit embedded controller Division.

"With these latest devices, we're able to meet these customers' needs with simplified versions that are less expensive and easier to use".

The new MPC53x devices feature: a 40MHz PowerPC core with 26 to 56Kbyte of SRAM; 512Kbyte to 1Mbyte of Flash memory; queued serial multichannel modules for UART and SPI functionality to support off-chip serial communications; an A/D convertor module with 16 analogue input channels; a controller area network module to enable the MCU to service CAN networks; a modular I/O system including 22 timing channels with additional functionality for applications including pulsewidth modulation; rigorous environmental testing; JTAG and Background Debug modules; and a pin-compatible upgrade path.

As with all Motorola microcontroller products, a comprehensive suite of hardware and software development tools is available for the MPC53x devices to help simplify and shorten customers' development cycles.

Development support is available from Motorola through Metrowerks, as well as from leading independent tool vendors providing processor probes, logic analysers, debuggers, simulation development environments, and C and C++ compilers.

Independent development tool suppliers who support the MPC500 family include Green Hills Software, WindRiver Systems, Lauterbach, Ashling Microsystems and others.

Motorola also offers a variety of resources to customers to help ease design efforts, shorten time to market and lower overall development costs including: a large library of MCU application notes; searchable technical MCU frequently asked questions and answers online; free downloadable initialisation tools; and additional downloadable software examples from Motorola's website.

All devices are available for production orders through Motorola and authorised distributors.

Suggested unit list prices (all US) in 10,000-piece quantities for the MPC53x devices are: $21.70 for the MPC533; $24.95 for the MPC534; $33.97 for the MPC535; and $39.07 for the MPC536.
