MCU and DSP features
combine in Flash hybrids
The 56F826 and 56F827 are Motorola's newest Flash-based hybrid controllers
Based on the 56800 core, both chips are ideal for a multitude of control, telephony and other applications requiring highly integrated, high-performance solutions with all the flexibility enabled by Flash technology. The 56800 hybrid architecture is designed from the ground up to provide users the ease of programming and enhanced compiler efficiency typically found in MCUs, with the processing power of a DSP.

By incorporating Motorola's vast library of intellectual property - particularly the sophisticated on-chip peripherals - and high-performance Flash memory, this portfolio of devices is uniquely positioned to address markets that traditionally require both a DSP and an MCU with a single chip solution.
New features and capabilities can also be added to traditional MCU-only applications.
Target applications for the 56F826 and 56F827 include point-of-sale terminals, uninterruptible power supplies, handheld devices, feature phones, robotics, motion control, and security systems.

In conjunction with the existing members of the 56F800 family - 56F801, 56F803, 56F805 and 56F807 - Motorola provides a comprehensive set of DSP controllers with varying levels of peripheral integration.
The 56F826 and 56F827 add improved synchronous serial interfaces and DAC-capable timers to the product family.
Coupled with their low power consumption, the new devices are well suited for battery-operated products.
The 56F826 provides: 36K x 16bit of Flash memory; 4.5K x 16bit of RAM; two serial communication interfaces; two serial port interfaces; synchronous serial interfaces; quad timers; interrupt controller; up to 48 general purpose I/O lines; an external memory interface; a JTAG/OnCE port; a power supervisor; and a time-of-day clock, all in a 100 LQFP package.
The 56F827 increases these features to include: 68K x 16bit of Flash; 5K x 16bit of RAM; three serial communication interfaces; 52 general-purpose I/O lines; and a 10-channel, 12bit ADC, all in a 128 LQFP package The 56F826 - as well as other members of the 56F800 family - is immediately available for production orders supported by Metrowerks CodeWarrior 4.0, the SDK 2.3 and evaluation modules (EVMs).
The 56F827 is scheduled for sampling, development tool availability and production release in the third quarter, 2001.
Suggested list prices for the 56F826 and 56F827 in 10K quantities are $9.00 and $10.50 (USD), respectively.
