Infineon Technologies has introduced what it claims is the world's smallest transient voltage suppression (TVS) diode for protecting antennas.

Applications include GPS, mobile television and remote keyless entry (RKE) and tire pressure monitoring systems (TPMS) in vehicles.

The ESD0P2RF-02LS TVS antenna protection diode has an area of 0.62 x 0.32mm and a 0.31mm height.

It protects antennas from electrostatic discharges (ESD) and can reliably absorb electrostatic discharges as high as 20kV.

High linearity up to 6 GHz together with a capacitance of 0.2 pF for a TVS diode and low clamping voltages in a bi-directional configuration make it suitable for sensitive RF antenna applications.

The ESD0P2RF-02LS integrates into complete modules and front-end systems and directly into original component packages of filters and ICs.

Its 0.31mm height makes it suitable for implementation in mobile phones and other thin portable devices.

The ESD0P2RFL-02LS has just 0.2 pF of parasitic capacitance and offers optimum signal integrity with maximum protection against ESD.

That means Infineon's diode has a response time of less than 0.5ns to shunt the electrostatic discharge current away from the protected circuit to a low and safe level.

This characteristic is advantageous in susceptible circuits in RF-antenna applications.

The ESD0P2RF-02LS diode offers a multi-strike ESD absorption capability up to 20kV contact discharge, exceeding the industry standard IEC61000-4-2 level 4 of 8kV.

The new antenna protection diode ESD0P2RF-02LS is designed for applications with signals swinging above and below ground with a maximum working voltage of up to +/-5.3V.

Because of its bidirectional characteristics with symmetrical clamping voltage, orientation of the device in the PCB is not an issue.

This TVS diode drains extremely low leakage currents down to 1nA (at 5.3V), helping to extend battery duration.

The ESD0P2RF-02LS is qualified according to the stringent standards such as the Automotive AECQ101 standard.
