IDT and Jungo Software Technologies have jointly developed a platform optimised for wireless LAN, and SOHO and residential gateways

The platform includes Jungo's OpenRG Linux-based software solution and IDT's RC32334 integrated communications processor, and offers designers improved time to market at a compelling system price/performance point. Jungo's OpenRG product features a complete set of software drivers, protocols and system management software, and supports IDT's RC32334 processor-powered 79S334J evaluation board.

This most recent joint effort builds on the previous engineering program that resulted in the optimisation of Jungo's OpenRG product for the 79RP351 and 79RP355 asymmetric digital subscriber line (ADSL)-based reference designs, announced earlier this year.

The IDT/Jungo partnership provides customers with well established, feature-rich solutions with a range of common software packages across IDT's family of integrated communications processors to enable faster development of a diverse set of customer premises equipment.

Jungo's OpenRG software, operating on an Embedded Linux kernel, improves overall time to market by offering a comprehensive software package featuring Internet sharing, system management, remote upgrade, network security, and plug-and-play home networking technology.

In addition, the adoption of Linux as the base of the software platform permits customers to leverage software modules that are broadly available in the public domain.

The upcoming version of OpenRG will also support CableHome 1.0, the specifications introduced by CableLabs, that enable cable operators to provide consumers with a secure, high-quality home networking system.

"System suppliers in emerging communications segments such as wireless access points and gateway equipment are increasingly being required to release a range of systems in a short amount of time that support the diverse set of wired and wireless interfaces vying for dominance in this area", said Jean-Charles Bouzigues, business development manager for IDT's Internetworking Products Division.

"Our continued partnership with Jungo provides IDT's customers multiple, flexible solutions with a common look and feel, enabling them to address this time to market challenge".

The RC32334 integrated communications processor incorporates a 150MHz 32bit MIPS instruction set architecture CPU core, an SDRAM controller and a PCI bridge to facilitate the development of flexible, cost-sensitive PCI-enabled platforms.

The incorporation of a PCIbus in the system allows users to leverage the PC infrastructure supporting this standard, including networking and storage peripherals.

"The use of PCI as the connectivity medium for the next generation of WLAN radio chipsets is driving our customers to identify cost-effective controllers that embed this interface on-chip", said Udi Yuhjtman, Jungo Software Technology's vice president of operations and business development.

"IDT has a proven track record delivering aggressively priced integrated processors, and this, combined with the performance capabilities of the CPU itself, provides a powerful, scalable platform capable of supporting both existing and future system functionality for wireless access points and gateway equipment".

Jungo's OpenRG software is also optimised for IDT's RC32332 integrated communications processor, appropriate for wireless access points that address lower system functionality and performance points.

IDT's portfolio of integrated communications processors includes the RC32355 and RC32351 processors, as well as the RC32334 and RC32332 devices, and provides designers of communications systems a range of choices as the base for cost-conscious embedded applications.

Jungo's OpenRG software is a specialised Linux-based operating system that enables OEMs to bring broadband CPE, such as residential gateways, SOHO gateways and IADs to market quickly.

The software infrastructure features highly integrated applications and services such as network security via a stateful inspection firewall, Internet Sharing, VPN support, and 'plug and play' home networking that includes HomePNA, wireless LAN 802.11b and Bluetooth.

The OpenRG software also contains remote upgrading capabilities and ATM (PPPoA, PPPoE, bridged/routed Ethernet over ATM) and TCP/IP protocol stacks.

The 79S334J development platform will be available from 1st July and is priced individually at $2750.
