Epcos has unveiled a new series of multilayer varistors called Cera diodes

Epcos has unveiled a new series of multilayer varistors (MLVs) called Cera diodes (CDs). This new range of varistors has been designed as a substitute for zener diodes and transient voltage surge (TVS) diodes in protecting sensitive components from incoming transient overvoltages and electrostatic discharges.

Compared with the conventional zener and TVS diode alternative, Cera diodes offer savings in both cost and space, providing an ideal solution for a wealth of applications.

The new Cera diode range is available in three sizes of packages depending on type: 0603 single line, 0508 dual line and 0612 quad array.

Over the SOD325 packaged zener alternative the CD 0603 package saves 18% in board space, while for the dual CD 0508 package there is a 58% saving in board space compared with a dual TVS diode in a SOT23 package.

The CD 0612 delivers a board space saving of 41% compared with a TVS diode in an SOT23-xL package.

Additional to PCB space saving, other advantages of an MLV solution over a conventional zener and TVS diode include bidirectional clamping, higher surge current handling capability, and lower capacitance as a function of biasvoltage and temperature, with MLV behaviour comparable to the excellent filtering properties of multilayer ceramic capacitors.
