The latest addition to the CompactCore family of small-form-factor embedded computing products is the PMC-106 symmetric multiprocessing dual PowerPC 7447 processor PMC board

The PMC-106 addresses the growing need for standards-based processing modules that fit into small spaces. The PMC-106 comes equipped with one or two Altivec-enabled Motorola MPC7447 processors operating at up to 1GHz, each with 64Kbyte of L1 cache, and 512Kbyte of internal L2 cache. The dual-processor version can support operating systems, such as Linux, that provide symmetric multiprocessing.

The PMC-106 provides 256Mbyte of double-datarate (DDR) SDRAM, providing 2Gbyte/s of peak memory bandwidth.

This memory incorporates error checking and correcting (ECC) circuitry for applications demanding extremely high reliability.

A 64bit, 133MHz PCI-X interface offers more than 1Gbyte/s (peak) transfer rate between the PMC and the host card.

The PMC-106 supports a Gigabit Ethernet interface enabling high-performance networking with the newest generation of systems.

The interface is backwards compatible with both 10 and 100Mbit/s Ethernet networks, and automatically adapts to the required speed.

The PMC-106 is also equipped with two EIA232/422 serial interfaces that operate at up to 115Kbit/s.

Additionally the card provides six general-purpose LVTTL discrete I/O signals that are interoperable with standard 5V TTL logic.

Many of Dy 4's customers' systems include some form of specialised I/O card that they design themselves.

Rather than including processors in their design, customers are incorporating a processor PMC.

By taking this approach, their design effort is simplified by focusing strictly on their I/O problem, and the resulting product is easily upgraded with faster processors as they become available from the COTS vendor community.

The PMC-106 offers the unique capability of allowing users to select the processor clock frequency, and thus the power dissipation, to match their specific application needs.

The clock frequency is software programmable and therefore in-system upgradeable if new revisions of application software require higher processing performance.

To cool the PMC-106, Dy 4 has developed an innovative cooling frame that minimises component operating temperatures, while staying compliant with the VITA 20 standard for conduction-cooled PMCs.

Operating system support is available or planned for Wind River VxWorks/Tornado, Green Hills Integrity and Timesys Linux.

The Dy 4 software suite also includes a run-time library supporting applications compiled to run without any RTOS.

Dy 4's proven IXLibs-AV DSP function library is supported for use on the PMC-106.

The PMC-106 will be available in a range of air-cooled and conduction-cooled configurations in the second quarter of 2004.
