Cypress unveils high-speed image sensor
Cypress Semiconductor has announced the commercial sampling of a high-sensitivity, high-speed SXGA (Super Extended Graphics Array) resolution CMOS image sensor with colour.
The 1.3-megapixel LUPA-1300-2-colour sensor offers a triggered and pipelined synchronous shutter and on-chip digital LVDS (Low Voltage Differential Signalling) outputs.
Developed for machine vision and motion analysis applications that need to distinguish between different colours, the image sensor features a high frame rate of 500 frames-per-second (fps) and windowing capability that delivers undistorted images and fast readout.
In addition, Cypress also announced the commercial sampling of a CMOS image sensor with digital data throughput of 13.2Gbps.
The 3.0-megapixel LUPA-3000 sensor offers a triggered and pipelined synchronous shutter with a high frame rate of 485fps and windowing capability for undistorted images and fast readout.
The sensor also features on-chip digital LVDS outputs that simplify the transport of sensor data and overall camera design for machine vision and holographic data storage applications.
The LUPA-1300-2-colour and the LUPA-3000 feature a fully synchronous snapshot shutter, making it possible to read one image while the next is being acquired and to capture moving objects without distortion.
The LUPA-1300 sensor has 12- and 10-bit digital LVDS outputs that allow image data to be transferred over longer distances on the circuit board, thus simplifying layout.
The windowing capability enables the user to read out only regions of interest in the image, increasing the effective frame rate.
It also has a multiple slope capability to maintain good contrast in shadowed regions without saturating bright areas in scenes with a high contrast ratio.
The LUPA-3000 sensor has 32- and 8-bit digital LVDS outputs that allow image data to be transferred over longer distances on the circuit board.
The windowing capability enables the user to read out only regions of interest in the image, increasing the effective frame rate.
It also has a dual slope capability to maintain good contrast in shadowed regions without saturating bright areas in scenes with a high contrast ratio.
The LUPA-1300-2-colour has 1,280 x 1,024 pixels with 14um x 14um pixel size.
The image sensor integrates a programmable offset and gain amplifier for each channel of the LVDS outputs.
Each channel runs at a 61MHz pixel rate, which results in 500fps frame rate at full resolution.
Higher frame rates can be achieved by windowed or sub-sampled read-out modes, which are all programmable over the SPI interface.
All internal exposure and read-out timings are generated by an on-board sequencer.
The intra-scene dynamic range can be increased by using the multiple slope operation.
The LUPA-1300-2-colour also features a 10-bit on-chip analogue-to-digital converter for digital output and on-chip timing control for application development.
It applies a Bayer RGB colour pattern, with colour reconstruction accomplished outside the sensor.
The LUPA-3000 has 1,696 x 1,710 pixels with 8um x 8um pixel size.
It integrates a programmable offset and gain amplifier for each channel of the LVDS outputs.
Each channel runs at a 206MHz pixel rate, which results in 485fps frame rate at full resolution.

The LUPA-3000 also features an 8-bit on-chip analogue-to-digital converter (ADC) for digital output and on-chip timing control for easy application development.
Cypress will demonstrate both CMOS image sensor solutions at Vision 2008 in Stuttgart, Germany, from 4-6 November in hall 4, stand 4E16.
