Colibrys has expanded its range of high-stability high-shock MEMS accelerometers with the launch of the new SMD MS 8000 series

Available in a 14.22 x 14.22mm LCC package, these new accelerometers have the added feature of an inbuilt temperature sensor thus giving the option of improved stability through external compensation. Sean Neylon, CEO at Colibrys said, "This new SMD version of our accelerometer family is a significant advance in our short term goal to dominate the market for supply of high shock-resistant, high stability accelerometers for precision guidance missile and smart weapons programmes.

We have been in production for some years now of customised parts for these applications and we are now advancing steadily towards providing a broad family of standard and semi-standard accelerometers targeted directly at defence and aerospace applications.

This latest product will consolidate Colibrys' position as a reputable volume supplier of cost competitive high performance compact accelerometers".

Henning Wicht, CEO at Wicht Technology Consulting said, "Today's market of inertial measurement units in aerospace and defence is looking for low cost, robust and compact MEMS devices.

The SMD accelerometer of Colibrys responds to a market need.

It offers easy integration and serial production to system integrators with standard manufacturing facilities".

Jean-Michel Stauffer, Business Development Manager at Colibrys for the Navigation and Guidance group added, "Our successful ability to penetrate and dominate the defence and aerospace markets will be an important stepping stone in the longer term goal of competing in the higher volume professional market for high-stability accelerometers for applications such as crop harvesting, robotic assembly, civilian guidance (ie blind people).

Our capacitive multilayer technology meets the technical requirement but needs to be industrialised to meet the volume/cost goals.

Most of our low-cost automotive supply based competitors use surface micro machining techniques and are finding it difficult to meet the minimum performance requirements demanded by these applications.

The battle for this middle-market will be an interesting area to watch in the coming years".
