Rising Micro-Electronics Co has successfully taped out its first series of 10Gbit/s high-speed optical transmission ICs - in less than 16 weeks

The circuits were developed using the Cadence Virtuoso custom design platform. Leveraging the unified platform, complete flow and best-of-breed technology offered by the Virtuoso platform for advanced custom IC development, Rising was able to tape out its complex communication ICs without having to respin silicon.

Touting itself as the first local IC design house to commercialise a 10Gbit/s optical transmission IC with its proprietary intellectual property (IP), Rising is targeting its first series of ICs at various high-end applications, such as 10Gbit/s optical Ethernet links, optical data links, high-definition television (HDTV) optical fibre links, synchronous optical network (Sonet) OC-192, synchronous digital hierarchy (SDH) STM-64 and wavelength division multiplexing (WDM).

"The Cadence Virtuoso platform includes advanced custom IC technologies required to develop complex radio frequency (RF) ICs.

It also enabled us to enhance our proprietary IP portfolio in the RF IC space", said Jianci Chen, Vice President, Rising.

"With Cadence technology and excellent support, we are confident we will bring more quality products to the Chinese market".

"Rising is the newest Cadence customer using the Virtuoso platform for RF IC design in China.

Rising's achievements reinforce the commitment of Cadence to ensure customer success", said Wayne Tang, General Manager, China/Hong Kong Operations.

"The combination of the skilled Rising design team and the best-of-breed Cadence technology and services was the critical factor that led to the successful tapeout.

This accomplishment illustrates the continued support of Cadence, enabling Chinese design companies to offer innovative, high-performance IC designs with first-pass silicon success".

The key components of the Virtuoso platform used by Rising include the Virtuoso Schematic Editor, Virtuoso Layout Editor, Virtuoso Spectre Circuit Simulator and Virtuoso Spectre RF Simulation Option, Diva physical verification and Virtuoso Analog Design Environment.

Based on this successful collaboration, Cadence and Rising have agreed to jointly work on future projects, such as front-end transceiver ICs for GPS, GSM, CDMA, and WLAN applications, as well as a 40Gbit/s high-speed optical transmission IC chipset.
