Processor goes lead free to comply

Aspex Semiconductor has introduced its Linedancer Extreme Processor in a lead-free package, complying with the European Unions directive on Restriction of Hazardous Substances (ROHS)

Aspex Semiconductor has introduced its Linedancer Extreme Processor in a lead-free package, complying with the European Unions directive on Restriction of hazardous substances (ROHS), which requires the exclusion of lead and other hazardous substances from new electrical and electronic equipment by July 2006.

Linedancer also meets the recommendation of Japans Ministry of Trade and Industry (MITI) to use only lead-free solder in all new products.

Aspex is already shipping Linedancer to its customers in 0.13µm lead free packages.

Future product shipments will be identified with the symbol "G" to indicate lead free packaging and solder balls.

Although over a year remains before the European directive is implemented, Aspex has introduced the package well ahead of the deadline to ensure a seamless transition for their customers once the directive is enforced.

The immediate availability of Linedancer in lead-free packaging guarantees that Aspex will continue to ship devices in quantity to customers without any affect on lead time or stock inventory following the July 2006 deadline.

"The use of lead in processors is of increasing environmental and commercial concern for our European customers who must comply with the RoHS directive, and for our Japanese customers whose lead-free initiatives are some of the most advanced in the world.

Aspex is shipping lead free devices ahead of the impending legislation.

This meets our customers demands for "green" goods in new design-ins, and gives our existing production customers confidence to build inventory," said Jeremy Hendy, VP of Marketing at Aspex.

Lead-free packaging is just one of a range of environmental benefits that Aspex is offering its customers.

The low energy consumption of Aspexs Linedancer processor (just 3.5W typical) also delivers environmental benefits to end users, who often replace large, power-hungry racks of server-class PCs with Linedancer devices, delivering far greater performance with a fraction of the energy consumption.

Fixed-function hardware platforms generally have to be scrapped each time an upgrade is needed, creating a mountain of high-technology waste.

The software programmability of Aspexs Extreme Processors means that Linedancer-based products can have a much longer product lifetime, reducing the amount of waste created.
