Anite Telecoms is to support the development-phase testing of E911 (emergency location) functionality for GSM mobile handsets in the USA.
At a recent meeting of the PCS Type Certification Review Board (PTCRB), held in Chicago, Anite Telecoms was the only company to announce that it will develop testing solutions to support the E911 guidelines.
The FCC's E911 requirements had stated that all US networks had to offer location-based services, whereby users dialling the 911 emergency-service number with a compatible terminal could be located by the emergency services.
In Europe, the European Commission's, DG INFSO, has initiated the Co-ordination Group on Access to Location Information by Emergency Services.
This body will define the requirements for a pan-European common location provisioning mechanism, which can be accessed and used by the European 112 community and emergency service operators.
Both network operators and mobile manufacturers have expressed their appreciation for Anite's support for testing these features during the PTCRB meeting.
"By providing support for US GSM requirements from the very beginning, we hope to allay any concerns that the industry may have regarding E911 handset testing", said Daniel Oosthuizen, Director at Anite Telecoms.
"This decision is part of Anite's commitment to the success of GSM in the USA and our dedication to speeding the introduction of new GSM products and services throughout North America.
Our commitment in the USA will enable us to support any future similar European moves from the start, in addition to keeping pace, most importantly, with the demand for location-based services".
The company's existing SAT test system is currently the leading test solution for the development of GPRS mobile devices.
The company has also developed comprehensive test solutions for EDGE, a technology growing in popularity among US operators.
