With consistent evolution of the FPGA architecture, Virtex FPGAs have continued to expand in usage since their introduction in 1997 to become the number one choice of designers worldwide.

The Xilinx Virtex series of high-performance FPGAs has surpassed US $5 billion in cumulative revenues.

With consistent evolution of the FPGA architecture, Virtex FPGAs have continued to expand in usage since their introduction in 1997 to become the number one choice of designers worldwide.

Key design team innovations in process technology, architecture and product development methodology have led to unprecedented performance and density gains over competing solutions.

With Xilinx 90nm Virtex-4 and 65nm Virtex-5 families, designers of logic, embedded processing, DSP, and high-speed serial applications can select from a variety of devices across multiple domain-optimised platforms in each family.

This multiplatform approach makes it possible for customers to select the optimal mix of resources for their application to achieve the highest functionality and breakthrough performance at the lowest cost.

Xilinx has also announced initial shipments of its 65nm Virtex-5 SXT FPGAs, optimised for high-performance DSP.

The Virtex-5 SXT platform expands the company's XtremeDSP portfolio with three new device options that meet the ultrahigh DSP bandwidth and lower system cost requirements of next-generation wireless and video applications.

With shipment of the SXT platform, the third of four Virtex-5 FPGA platforms, Xilinx brings the performance, power and cost benefits of the leading-edge 65nm process node to system developers 12 months in advance of competing solutions.

"This milestone underscores the value that Virtex has delivered to over 10,000 unique customers over the last ten years", said Xilinx President, CEO and Chairman of the Board Wim Roelandts.

"Built on a solid foundation of over 1200 patents, Virtex Series FPGAs today can be found at the heart of 'triple play' infrastructure systems".

"Virtex FPGAs continue to be deployed in thousands of applications throughout the globe, ranging from networking and telecom infrastructure to wireless basestations, multimedia and audio/video applications".
