Toshiba Electronics Europe's latest range of scalable, low-power ARM-based microcontrollers allows designers to quickly and easily add man-machine interface (MMI) functionality to embedded designs.

The TMPA912CMAXBG is based on the 32-bit ARM926EJ-S core and is ideal for embedded systems that require integrated display control and graphic-processing capabilities but do not need all the performance, memory and functionality offered by previous models in the Toshiba ARM9 range.

Full pin and software compatibility with other products in the range protects investment by supporting upgrades to higher-end devices as necessary, with minimum system-redesign.

As well as the low-power, 32-bit ARM926EJ-S core running at 200MHz (0C to +70C) and 150MHz (-20C to +85C), the new micro offers 32Kbytes of embedded RAM for program, data and display memory.

A memory controller supports SDR and DDR SDRAM and can address up to 2.5Gbytes of linear access space.

Integrated features in MMI designs include a built-in LCD controller, a touch-screen interface, a CMOS camera interface and an LCD data processor accelerator (LCDA).

The LCD controller is suitable for TFT and STN display sizes up to 1024 x 768 pixels.

The LCDA supports resolutions to WVGA (800 x 480) and delivers image scaling, filtering and blending functions.

Connectivity options include SPI, UART, I2C, I2S and a high-speed USB device (480Mbps).

Additional built-in peripherals include a 10-bit ADC, a six-channel 16-bit timer, a watchdog timer and real-time clock and alarm functionality.

The TMPA912CMAXBG is supplied in a 361-pin FPGA package.

It is supported by extensive software-tools that include graphics libraries and embedded operating systems.

The new device is supported through the availability of a starter kit and reference platform that further speed application development and prototyping.

The TMPA912CMAXBG is pin compatible with the TMPA910CRBXBG, TMPA911CRXBG and TMPA913CHXBG.
