Multichip package houses
complete motor drive
A compact, single-device solution provides high-efficiency, low-noise driving of three-phase brushless DC (BLDC) motors with ratings to 400V
The new TB6581H provides a complete full-wave sinewave PWM motor driver solution that can control BLDC motors via an analogue speed control signal supplied by a host microcontroller. Toshiba's TB6581H integrates the company's TPD4103AK single chip, 500V inverter and the company's TB6551F three-phase brushless motor controller IC into a single multichip package (MCP).

Low power bus switches shift levels
High-speed CMOS 2bit dual supply bus switches provide an interface between two nodes at differing voltage levels
The result is a single part that will significantly reduce the acoustic and electrical noise of PWM motor drive applications, as well as improving efficiency levels and minimising component count.
Electrical and acoustic noise can be introduced into PWM motor control applications by the rapid switching of motor coil current.
Traditionally this problem has been addressed using an external microcontroller and software that manipulates the PWM signal to generate a sinusoidal motor coil current waveform.
In the case of the TB6581H, however, the sinewave is generated automatically and fed directly to the integrated inverter.
As a result, a single part can now be used to quickly and easily implement a "silent" motor drive with all of the high-efficiency and low-power dissipation benefits provided by sinus modulated PWM control.

The TB6581H inverter module is rated for 400V/2A operation and switching frequencies up to 25kHz, and features six IGBTs arranged in three half-bridge units.
A bootstrap system with an integral diode minimises the need for external power supply hardware for the high side drive.
The integrated sine wave PWM controller features a built-in triangular wave generator with a carrier frequency of fosc/254Hz.
A lead angle control function offers the facility to move the lead angle between 0 and 58 degrees in 32 separate steps.
This allows designers to fine tune their application for optimum efficiency, facilitating the use of lower cost, lower power and smaller motors.
Operating from a nominal power supply of 15V, the TB6581H incorporates an on-chip regulator and built-in protection against overcurrent and undervoltage conditions.
A thermal shutdown function is also provided as standard.
Designed to minimise PCB space, the TB6581H is supplied in a package with dimensions of just 29.3 x 15.7 x 4.5mm.
Mounting area, therefore, can be reduced by 20% when compared with the previous dual chip approach.
Package options allow for both horizontal and vertical board mounting.
Support for engineers using the TB6581H includes a dedicated evaluation board that allows designers to rapidly test and prototype motor applications based on the new MCP part.
