A new compact, high-performance CMOS 8bit MCU with on-chip Flash memory aims to simplify the design of LCD-based applications by eliminating the need for external data and program storage

A new compact, high-performance CMOS 8bit microcontroller with on-chip Flash memory will significantly simplify the design of LCD-based applications by eliminating the need for external data and program storage. Toshiba's new TMP87EP26F is the first LCD-type 8bit microcontroller that allows designers to reduce cost, size, component count and power consumption by providing onboard separated Flash memory for data and program storage.

The device is particularly suitable to applications such as home appliances where key status information needs to be stored in the event of a power failure.

In addition, by removing the need for an external memory bus, the TMP87EP26F will also help to simplify board layout and EMC compliance.

The TMP87EP26F high-performance 8bit microcontroller incorporates 16Kbyte of Flash program memory, 512byte of Flash data memory, 32Kbyte of ROM and 2Kbyte of RAM.

Onboard LCD functionality comprises a 40 segment x 4 com LCD driver with a display memory of 20byte.

In addition the microcontroller offers two 16bit and two 8bit timers, an 8bit A/D convertor, and two clock generators delivering frequencies of 8MHz and 32kHz, respectively Connectivity options consist of two serial interfaces and 11 input/output ports.

The microcontroller's CPU core comprises the CPU, a system clock controller, an interrupt controller and a watchdog timer.

Designed to operate at frequencies up to 8MHz, the TMP87EP26F is rated for an operating voltage of 4.5 to 5.5V.

Five power saving modes of stop, slow, idle1, idle2 and sleep allow designers to minimise power consumption under a wide variety of operating conditions.

The TMP87EP26F is supplied in a QFP100 package.
