TTems has been awarded a new contract with Chelton Defence Communications.

Electronics Manufacturing Services provider TTems (TT electronic manufacturing services) has been awarded a new contract with Chelton Defence Communications (CDC) - the world leader in the design, manufacture and supply of digital vehicle intercom systems and part of the Cobham Group.

The benefit of improved communications and situation awareness has become increasingly apparent from lessons learnt in Iraq and, as a result, CDC has witnessed an unprecedented rise in demand for its communication products.

To meet this demand, CDC has selected TTems to provide production support capacity, to work alongside its existing facility in Blackburn, to satisfy requirements for improved communications in armoured and light vehicle fleets around the world.

In particular, TTems is manufacturing PCB assemblies for CDC's LV2 communication systems used for in-vehicle communication under battlefield operating conditions, allowing crew members to be in continuous contact with each other.

The LV2 systems are ideal for strike and light vehicles (eg HMMWV, Land Rover, M1025, M1114) that require a reduced built in test (BIT) and radio programming capability and no vehicle alarm interfaces.

Each crew member has independent control of connected radios while retaining receive access of all radios, and can operate in hands free, voice activated, or listening silence modes.

TTems' experience of supplying leading industry names in aerospace and defence sectors on many high profile projects implied that the company's expertise was a natural fit for CDC's requirements.

The company is manufacturing four unique PCB assemblies, in expected volumes of 2000 per week, to be used in the two units which comprise the LV2 communication system - the dual full function crew station and a master control station.

Fully involved in SMT, hand assembly and product testing, TTems has employed additional personnel to meet material and test requirements and is now working as a shadow production facility for CDC.

Andrew Cox, Director and General Manager of TTems Rogerstone, says: "Chelton Defence Communications has a strong market presence and an excellent reputation for product performance throughout Western military markets".

"It is extremely gratifying that TTems has been selected on the strength of its capabilities and expertise to work with such a key industry player".

"TTems' business in the defence market continues to grow from strength to strength and this new contract with Chelton adds to the growing list of prestigious defence companies that TTems is now working alongside".

Steve Colliers, Managing Director, Chelton Defence Communications, says: "Systems such as our LV2 product are known to both improve operational efficiency and save lives out in the field.

It is therefore of the utmost importance that our products are of the best possible quality and so we only choose to work with suppliers of the highest calibre".
