Two new 2.2in colour TFT displays feature the high resolution and thin profile required for smaller sized smartphones or other applications requiring increased information content.

Three-Five Systems has two new 2.2in colour TFT displays that feature the high resolution and thin profile required for smaller sized smartphones or other applications requiring increased information content.

The new displays are available as Platform Products which allow for semi-customisation of the standard product configuration.

TFS' design centres and application engineers throughout the world can customise the Platform Products to meet virtually any set of customer requirements in a short period of time, reducing original equipment manufacturers' time to market and development costs.

The 176 x 220 TFT (part number TFS1722-018) from TFS offers a large-sized TFT display in a simple single main display configuration, with the ability to add a secondary subdisplay.

The 320 x 240 TFT (part number TFS3224-017) is a QVGA module capable of accurately and clearly displaying web pages, spreadsheets, photos and games.

It features a two-chip integrated driver solution, allowing for a smaller form factor.

Both displays have 18bit RGB/18bit CPU selectable interfaces for video and high-resolution images, and each has the option of adding a touch screen.

"Handsets are increasingly migrating to the larger 2.2in size", said Tim Kaske, Product Line Manager, Platform Products for TFS.

"These new displays allow manufacturers to improve and increase the usability of their mobile electronics products to the end customer".

"Our Platform Product approach for TFT displays helps our customers deliver their new products utilising the latest in display technology, like high resolution QVGA displays, to market faster than if they went with a full-custom design".

TFS employs a fabless foundry model approach in its Platform Product line, the company's semicustom TFT product offering designed specifically for OEMs in the high-volume mobile electronics market.

Using this new fabless TFT foundry model, similar to the established fabless semiconductor model used in IC development, TFS has partnered its LCD design services and product groups with the world's top-tier TFT panel manufacturers.

The TFS Platform Product line begins with a standardised glass platform.

TFS' global display design and applications engineers then tailor certain aspects of the display, such as the flex interface, subdisplay or mounting features, to optimise a customer's particular application.

TFS then employs its low-cost EMS structure to manufacture these state-of-the-art colour LCD modules.

This approach eliminates a full-custom design process, resulting in reduced time-to-market and cost.

For customers with unique display requirements, TFS also offers full-custom display design and manufacturing through its LCD module centres of excellence, located at the company's Tempe, Arizona and Beijing, China facilities.
