Texas Instruments has revealed the architecture for its next generation of residential gateway solutions
Delivering on its strategy to enable service providers to offer quality voice, data and advanced video services, Texas Instruments has revealed the architecture for its next generation of residential gateway solutions. The UR8 architecture, which will serve as the foundation for a full family of residential gateway solutions, features an open platform, exceptional voice capabilities and advanced multimedia processing over all DSL standards.

'TI's next generation residential gateway platform, the UR8 architecture, should translate to 'GUR-8' [great] solutions for both manufacturers and providers by enabling faster development time (for less cost), a menu of integration and interface options, and faster time to market (for more revenue)', said Joyce Putscher, Principal Analyst for Residential Connectivity at the research firm In-Stat.
The UR8 architecture comprises an advanced multimedia processor, a programmable DSL PHY, a high-performance DSP-based voice subsystem and a rich set of standard interfaces.
A well-defined API reduces time to market by allowing maximum hardware and software reuse across all DSL platforms.
Delivering on TI's Uni-DSL vision, the common platform allows operators to affordably deploy a variety of high-bandwidth services over all ADSL and VDSL standards.
In addition, manufacturers can leverage TI's extensive third-party network to deliver further differentiation.

'Our customers are working on numerous designs to meet the growing needs of operators, and the UR8 architecture has been developed to help them do just that', said Dennis Rauschmayer, General Manager of TI's Residential Gateway and Embedded Systems business.
'Our next generation family of products will be based on UR8's open, scalable platform to enable OEMs and ODMs to design residential gateways with multiple variations of feature functionality, including advanced video services and outstanding voice capabilities'.
Based on a dedicated, high-performance DSP, the UR8 architecture enables exceptional voice capabilities and delivers on TI's vision of fixed mobile convergence (FMC) throughout the home with support for up to four channels of wireline or wireless voice.
In addition, the programmable voice subsystem allows manufacturers to leverage TI's extensive voice codec library and Telogy Software for VoIP, including wideband codecs, wireline and wireless codecs, and advanced features such as fax and modem relay, packet-loss minimisation and noise-reducing algorithms.
The UR8 architecture also integrates a multimedia processor to deliver enhanced processing power to enable high definition television (HDTV) and other advanced video services, as well as voice and data, throughout the home.
